Totnes Odyssey (Original)

Totnes Odyssey (Original)

A song I wrote about 4 years ago. I've performed it a lot at open mic nights and gigs and its the most popular original song in my repoirtoire. If I had singles released it would be my top number one hit! I wrote it just after me and my first girl-friend got together. She lives in Totnes and I lived in Plymouth and I was visiting her a lot there; I had just come out of a self destructive period and being with her was a breath of fresh air but also life changing and transformative. It tells of my amazement at coming from a dark, twisted city where I was dark and twisted to such a bright, cooky hippy village where this pure woman wanted me to be in life and help raise her child. The wholesomeness was new to me. The line '4 years ago sat in sunshine' was originally '6 months ago I sat in sunshine' but as the years have gone on I have updated the time past, partly to keep it relevnant, but also as a homage so something I saw my hero folk-singer Joan Baez do when I saw her in concert a few year ago - she sang 'Diamonds and Rust' about her breakup with Bob Dylan and changed the line '10 years ago I bought you some cufflinks' to '50 years ago I bought you some cufflinks' and the crowd gasped. Had it really been so long? And yet the power of her performance was painfully present. I wanted to mark time in the same way. I wrote it in about 30 minutes one sleep deprived afternoon while she was downstairs playing with her toddler son. Its been the only song I've written so easily and quickly, it just came to me. This is my first test of my new Rode NIT2-A microphone. Sitting in the Red Wizard cafe on Totnes Highstreet Wearing my new skater shoes upon my feet And all the people that I meet, they are very strange But I am also very strange so I can't complain Four years ago I sat in sunshine though my soul was dark And all the people in a hurry to destroy their hearts Where the mothers herbal teas and all the lovers and the trees and all the buskers in their Totnes Odyssey I can't believe the place I come from and where I'm going to Whats going down in Plymouth town probably a part in a pub and I would be there for some reason right now I'm not the Bohemiam triangle is strong and I know that I'm in love and I know that its not wrong cause its from above Oh what a strange place is this even graffiti on the wall is a picture of an angel saying something spiritual with my new skater shoes I have some doubts Can I fit in In a town where fitting in is really fitting out? I can't believe the place I come from and where I'm going to My love is waiting at the station for her train to arrive Now its late she finds a way just to pass the time And she's done the train has come and she has come along side and many miles away I can surly say that so have I I have the stink of the city still hanging on my breath and the self inflicted wounds gaping on my chest If I was falling then she caught me and laid me down to rest In this peculiar existence that is called Totnes I can't believe the place I come from and where I'm going to Oh the moon, she pulls the tides She's pulling something inside of you, of me, and our single energy Do I believe the falacy, well I know is what I see The full moon high, up in the sky shes smiling down on you and me In our Totnes Odyssey
