Arizona-California-Nevada Tri-State Border to Mojave Desert | Scenic Desert Drive
Embarking on a journey from the Arizona-California-Nevada Tri-State Border to the Kelso Dunes in Mojave via roads 163, 95, and 164, offers an immersive experience of the American Southwest's dramatic landscapes. Starting from the tri-state border, you head southwest on Highway 163, with sweeping views of the Colorado River winding through rugged, arid terrain. As you leave the river behind, the road transitions into open desert expanses, punctuated by distant mountain ranges. On Highway 95, the scenery becomes more remote and austere. The desert stretches out on either side, with occasional Joshua trees and hardy shrubs. Long, straight stretches of road highlight the vastness and solitude of the desert landscape. Turning west onto Highway 164, the terrain gradually changes, with more Joshua trees and creosote bushes appearing. The mountains draw closer, and the landscape becomes more varied, creating a sense of anticipation as you approach the Mojave National Preserve. Entering the Mojave National Preserve via Ivanpah Road, you encounter rugged mountains and volcanic formations against open desert plains. The road winds through this dramatic terrain, offering glimpses of diverse plant life and geological features. The air is dry and clear, enhancing the sense of remoteness. As you drive deeper into the preserve, the Kelso Dunes come into view, rising from the desert floor with their golden sands shimmering in the sunlight. These massive dunes, among the tallest in North America, create a surreal and captivating sight. The final approach to the Kelso Dunes is through a stark, beautiful desert landscape that seems untouched by time, offering a memorable conclusion to your journey.
