Following the announcement that CU starting quarterback Sal Aunese was diagnosed with stomach cancer, questions were swirling as to whether sophomore Darian Hagan would be able to step up and lead the Buffaloes to an opening day victory against a historic Texas Longhorns program. Those questions would quickly be answered as the Buffaloes would go on to beat the Longhorns 27-6 Hagan would lead the team in rushing with 116 yards and a touchdown. Hagan would also throw for 95 yards and a touchdown in the contest. Heisman hopeful Eric Bieniemy would have to wait another week for his coming out party after only rushing for 66 yards and one touchdown throughout the contest. Meanwhile, the Buffaloes defense would would sack Texas quarterback Mike Murdock five times throughout the game. The defense would also hold Texas to an average of 3.9 yards per play during the course of the game. Colorado would ride the momentum following this game, finishing the regular season with a 10-0 record and punching their ticket to the Orange Bowl. All questions regarding the Colorado quarterback spot would be answered by season's end, where Darian Hagan would be elected a third team AP All-American. Alongside Hagan, five other CU players would earn All-America honors at the end of the season.
