Following a loss to No.2 Nebraska, the University of Colorado Buffaloes would head east to Lewis Field to take on the Oklahoma St. Cowboys. The Buffaloes would be facing a familiar face in the game, former assistant coach Bob Simmons who would find himself in line to take over Colorado coaching duties before the hire of Rick Neuheisel. With the hire of Neuheisel, Simmons would find himself in a first year head coaching position in Stillwater. With Koy Detmer out for the season with an ACL injury, John Hessler would start in his fifth straight game for the Buffaloes. Throughout the course of the game, Hessler would go on to throw for 301 yards while also racking up a school record five touchdowns for the second time of the season. The Buffaloes would find themselves tied with the Cowboys at seventeen a piece heading into halftime, yet would find a spark in the second half, outscoring the Cowboys 28-15 to win the game by a score of 45-32. The Buffaloes would net 510 total yards throughout the game. Sophomore tailback Lendon Henry would lead the team on the ground with eighty-four yards and a touchdown. The formidable receiving duo of Rae Carruth and Phil Savoy would combine for 165 total yards receiving and three touchdowns. Defensively, linebacker Matt Russell would lead the team with twelve total tackles on the day. Following the loss to Nebraska, the Buffaloes win over the Cowboys would prove resilient for Neuheisel and his team. Following the win, the Buffaloes would find themselves moving up to the No.9 spot in the AP Poll rankings the following week. The win would be the start of a three game win streak that would ultimately help the Buffaloes find themselves playing in the Cotton Bowl, where they would extend their streak to four games without a loss.
