Caught On Camera: Man Steals Ambulance

ELYRIA -- Police said the joyride only lasted three minutes but they are looking for the man who stole an ambulance tonight. Paramedics said they parked the ambulance near the University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center emergency room about 3 a.m. Tuesday, Dec.30, 2014 when someone jumped into the ambulance and drove off with it, police said. The paramedics had just taken a patient inside the hospital and the ambulance was empty. Police believe the suspect had tried to steal another ambulance earlier that morning. He first jumped into the front seat of a nearby ambulance, but left when he saw a paramedic in the back. A dispatcher tracked the stolen ambulance using an on-board GPS. "I'm always flabbergasted with the stupidity of some people when it comes to stuff like this... you know, why would you possibly steal an ambulance... when you do that, it's no longer useable for anything else, you can't use it to save a life or do whatever you need to do as an ambulance," said Herb De La Porte. Officers searched the area, but were unable to find anyone matching the ambulance thief's description. The man's erratic driving set off a camera inside the ambulance pointed at the driver's seat. Police have uploaded footage from the camera onto Youtube.
