Woman playing piano STORYLINE: Twenty years ago this week a respected party official died in the Chinese capital Beijing, starting two months of student-led protests that would end in June 1989, in the city's Tiananmen Square. Construction worker Qi Zhiyong was 33 years old in 1989. He was married and had a son. It was a simple, happy life, but all that changed abruptly during the military crackdown. Qi took part in the student movement that preceded the crackdown, along with thousands of others. He would ride his bike after work to talk to the people in the movement who were camping in the square, a movement that began with the death on 15 April, 1989, of Hu Yaobang, a Communist Party official deposed by hard-liners. An estimated hundred thousand students turned out for the funeral and marched into the heart of China's capital to set up camp in Tiananmen Square. When dawn came Qi used to take his bike and ride home but on the night of 3 June, 1989, things changed. Persistent rumours suggested that the People's Liberation Army had entered the city with tanks and trucks, armed with guns and ammunition and that they had already opened fire in the West side of the city.
