Hong Kong protesters demand an end to 'one part dictatorship'

(27 May 2018) Hundreds of people marched in Hong Kong on Sunday ahead of the 29th anniversary of the brutal 1989 crackdown on student protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The protesters marched under the slogan "an end to one party dictatorship" ahead of an annual candle light vigil held on June 4 to commemorate the crackdown. They chanted slogans and held banners reading "Resist authoritarianism and commemorate June 4" amid a recent debate whether such calls may be deemed illegal. The city's pro-Beijing camp have recently said calling and end to a "one-party dictatorship" is against the law and anyone doing so risks disqualification in the city's legislative council. The chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China said at the rally that the calls would continue to be made because "this is what we are expecting and we demanding to happen in China."
