The #ICJ ruling on #climatechange has changed the narrative! Big polluters & governments can now be held accountable for emissions and harmed communities can claim reparations. Engage with climate activists, legal & policy experts on the implications of the ruling for #climatejustice In 2019, students from the University of the South Pacific in PORT VILA, advocated for the Government of Vanuatu to take the world’s biggest problem⸺climate change⸺to the world’s highest court which led to a historic ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on July 23rd, 2025. The ICJ issued a landmark advisory opinion, recognising that climate change is an urgent and existential threat facing the world, stating that under international law nations can be held legally accountable for their greenhouse-gas emissions and those harmed by human-caused climate change may be entitled to reparations. The panel will explore strategies and provisions that can be leveraged by the climate justice movement on key political issues like reparations, Common But Differentiated Responsibility and Respective Capability (CBDR-RC), equity and also the policy tracks including climate finance, just transition, adaptation, loss and damage and mitigation.
