Hi, this is Dr. Jim Craig with Summerbrook Dental Group. One of the questions I get asked most commonly by patients is what is the deal with all of the over-the-counter teeth whitening products that are available out there? Or even the professional teeth whitening products? The over-the-counter teeth whitening products and professional teeth whitening products are both based in peroxide. Now, that's not hydrogen peroxide, so don't go buy some hydrogen peroxide and scrub it on your teeth. It's different types of peroxide. With the exception of the toothpaste and the mouth rinses that claim to be teeth whitening, those really don't have any peroxide in them. I don't know how they get away with calling themselves whitening products. I don't see very much effect from them. With the professional and over the counter products that do have peroxide, however, what varies is the strength. So, you can buy white strips or gels over the counter and those come in strengths of about 5 percent and 10 percent usually. You can get your teeth white, but it takes a long time. Professional products like a tray that you might have made at your dentist in Aurora CO where you take it home and put the gel in it and wear them for an hour or two at a time, those come in strengths of around 15 percent to 35 percent. So, they're a lot stronger and they work a little bit faster. Some of the in-office whiteners that have lasers or lights or feature a one-hour result, they actually do work. But the problem is you can get irreversible cold sensitivity that's really bad for some of those products. Not all patients, but I have seen it happen. My best advice to patients is to get a professional teeth whitening tray with gel that you can take home and use on your own at home. That way you make sure that you're doing it in increments so that the sensitivity isn't an issue and you're not whitening your teeth for eight months at a time. You're just doing it for a couple of weeks and getting a nice result. As your Aurora Dentist I look forward to visiting with you more about this at your next appointment at Summerbrook Dental Group.
