Periodontal disease is usually treated by a deep cleaning, where the dentist or hygienist will numb your gums and clean out the germs and any dead tissue that may be living under there. Over time, periodontal disease can be arrested, but it doesn't go away. It's not curable. I like to think of periodontal disease as being like a cancer that goes into a remission. If you've ever had periodontal disease, or a deep cleaning in the past, you should return to your dentist about every three months to make sure this condition stays in remission, so that you don't continue to lose that important jaw bone, which may never regrow.
