Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Dynamic Formatting in Excel | Format Every Other Row with Custom Colors. Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In yesterday's episode, we discussed a common formatting issue faced by many Excel users - how to format every other row in a data set. As I was trying to come up with the best solution, Lisa, one of our viewers, sent me an email with her own method. And let me tell you, it's pretty cool! Lisa's method may seem a little destructive at first, but it actually solves the problem in a very efficient way. The best part is, you're not limited to just two formatting options like I mentioned in the previous episode. With Lisa's method, you can choose any colors you want to alternate between rows. In this video, we'll use a bold red and blue format, but I'm sure you'll come up with something more visually appealing for your own data. So, here's how it works. First, format the first two rows in your desired colors. Then, select those rows and double click the fill handle. Yes, I know, it seems like a disaster at first - all your data is messed up! But don't panic, just open the dropdown that appears in the lower right-hand corner and select "Fill Formatting Only". And just like that, all your original data comes flying back, with the added bonus of every other row being formatted as well. It's like magic! I was so impressed with Lisa's method that I'm giving her an Excel master pin for it. It's a great idea that offers more flexibility in terms of color options. And don't worry about losing your data - it's all there in the undo stack and can easily be retrieved by selecting "Fill Formatting Only". However, there is still one issue with this method - if you insert new rows, the formatting will get messed up. But don't worry, in tomorrow's episode, we'll discuss a better solution that is dynamic and can handle inserted rows.
