On June 17, 2012, The Red Cross opened a shelter to provide comfort and assistance to residents displaced by a devastating five-alarm fire that took place on Fulton Avenue in the Village of Hempstead. Since that evening, the Red Cross has registered 116 residents for its services--meals, beverages, health services, emotional support and referrals to Nassau County Department of Social Services (DSS). Of those individuals, 72 people, including 20 children, stayed the night at the shelter.
