As a trained sailor who served during the Korean War, it is certain 85-year-old Navy veteran Frank Hernandez saw many life-altering events and endured some hardships. This idea complicates understanding how such a beloved and decent man who withstood many things was targeted and lost to a tawdry street crime on domestic ground. In the late afternoon of Wednesday, May 31, 2017, Frank took his daily walk to purchase lottery tickets at a nearby store. As he travelled in the 300 block of East 220th Street, Carson, he was randomly attacked from behind and struck on the head with a fist. The suspect robbed the elderly victim of his money, attempted to rob another person nearby and fled the scene on foot. Frank fought seven days to survive, but succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday afternoon, June 7, 2017. Frank Hernandez was married for 60 years. He and his wife shared four children and nine grandchildren. During a press conference on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, in front of Carson Sheriff’s Station, Homicide Bureau Captain Christopher Bergner introduced Frank Hernandez’s widow and family members who came to make a public plea for assistance in locating their beloved patriarch’s murderer. Detective Adam Kirste and Detective Sergeant Frederick Reynolds described the suspect as male Hispanic adult in his 20s with a light complexion and short, curly hair. The suspect wore a gray hooded sweatshirt, dark shorts and a dark baseball cap at the time of the crime. The detectives and Mayor Albert robles, city of Carson, presented a $25,000 reward offered by the city council, city of Carson, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of 85-year-old Korean War veteran, Frank Hernandez.
