"A promise from the Taliban that terrorists can never again operate from Afghan soil," said Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, who led a delegation that signed an agreement with Taliban leaders in Qatar on Saturday. U.S. and Taliban officials signed a peace deal that aims to wind down the war in Afghanistan after more than 18 years of fighting that turned into the longest conflict in American history. Pompeo called it a “momentous” day for the U.S. and Afghan people but cautioned that much work lies ahead. The deal calls for U.S. troop levels to fall to 8,600 within 135 days, from about 13,000 now, and for all U.S. forces to withdraw in 14 months if the accord holds.
