Egypt's security services broke up camps occupied by supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi, and according to independent news reports close to 300 people died in street fighting. The systematic police assault on mostly unarmed protestors has drawn sharp criticism from the European Union, the US and even Iran and Kuwait. Army spokesmen have declared a state of emergency and promised illegal demonstrations would be crushed, while supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi vowed to defy the army with more protests.
