Being specific will get the program director or admissions committee member to read, and enjoy, your entire personal statement, even if it is longer than one page. Some candidates, particularly for medical resedency, do not believe this. Programs have disseminated the idea that they will not read any personal statement longer than one page. The reason is that most personal statements are bad and not worth reading, and it is faster to dismiss one page than it is two. The result of forcing yourself to adhere to the one-page limit is usually an underdeveloped, and therefore unsuccessful, personal statement.
