Metaphors can help distinguish a personal statement. However, they can also hurt, and they are difficult to pull off successfully. For this video we define "metaphor" as any comparison, for example, "The practice of internal medicine is like solving a puzzle," and "He has the heart of a lion." For our purposes it can be a metaphor even if it does not use "like" or "as." We discuss when to use metaphors and, if so, how to decide which metaphor to use and how to integrate it successfully into your personal statement. For example, if a metaphor is a cliche, it will hurt your personal statement, but even the most commonly used metaphor can be adjusted to succeed for the right personal statement. We provide specific guidelines to follow. Does your personal statement achieve its goals already without the metaphor? Can your personal statement stand on its own without the metaphor? Does the metaphor fit within the narrative flow of your personal statement? Is the metaphor unique to you? Share This Personal Statement Video: • How to Start Your Personal Statement to Ge...
