Catholic Daily Readings and Reflection | Optional Memorial of the Most Holy Name of Jesus | January 3, 2026 They cut his flesh and gave him a name. Eight days old. Too young to understand. The Son of God submitted to circumcision, the covenant sign carved into Abraham's descendants for two thousand years. And when the rite was complete, they spoke the name the angel commanded: Jesus. Yeshua. God saves. This name was not chosen from family tradition. It came from heaven before the child was conceived. You shall name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. Paul tells the Philippians what that name would become. God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. The baby who could not lift his head would have a name that makes demons tremble. The infant being circumcised in a forgotten corner of the empire would have a name emperors bow before. But first he had to empty himself. Though in the form of God, he did not grasp equality with God. He emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, becoming obedient to death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him.
