3 women HC judges, 5 male HC judges, an ex-ASG recommended by Collegium to become SC judges

21 months after sending its last recommendation to the Centre for elevation of judges to India's top court, the Supreme Court Collegium has finalized 9 names as part of fresh recommendations to the Centre to fill judicial vacancies. Nine jurists have been recommended after deliberations by the 5-judge Collegium; comprising of CJI Justice NV Ramana, Justice UU Lalit, Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice LN Rao. The fresh recommendations have been made within a week of retirement of Justice RF Nariman, who was earlier a member of the Collegium. The 9 jurists recommended by the Collegium are: Justice Hima Kohli, current Chief Justice of Telangana High Court - Justice BV Nagarathna, currently serving as Karnataka High Court judge - Justice Bela Trivedi, currently serving as Gujarat High Court judge - Justice AS Oka, current Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court - Justice Vikram Nath, current Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court - Justice JK Maheshwari, current Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court - Justice CT Ravikumar, currently serving as Kerala High Court judge - Justice MM Sundaresh, currently serving as Madras High Court judge Former Additional Solicitor General of India, Senior Advocate PS Narasimha (will be 9th lawyer to directly become SC judge if elevated) If the 9 aforementioned jurists are elevated to the apex court by the Centre, Justice BV Nagarathna will become the 1st woman to assume charge as the Chief Justice of India in 2027. However, the order in which the judges are elevated will decide their seniority in the court, as all top court judges are mandated to retire at the age of 65. Justice Vikram Nath and senior lawyer PS Narsimha may also become Chief Justices if their names are cleared by the Centre and they are sworn in before other judges. With Justice Navin Sinha demitting office today, there are 10 vacancies in the Supreme Court, whose Collegium had last sent recommendations to the Centre in November 2019 before the retirement of then-CJI Justice Ranjan Gogoi. Rising vacancies of judges and lack of physical hearings during the pandemic have led to an increase in the number of pending cases from 60,000 to around 70,000 in the Supreme Court.
