Gov. Phil Murphy is revealing clear cut dates to reopen the next pieces of the economy if businesses follow health and safety guidelines from the state. Health experts continue to grow more confident the outbreak is slowing down. Starting next weekend, horse racing will resume without fans in the grandstands. Daycares will reopen in two week to help workers who are getting back on the job. Non-contact organized sports will start up again a week later, but will be limited to outdoors-only. And restricted versions of summer camp can resume July 6. And in another major announcement, Murphy says he anticipates raising the limits on indoor gatherings that would allow for more religious services beginning June 12. It hinges on compliance by the businesses and the number of coronavirus cases staying on a downward trend. Friday health officials announced 1,117 new confirmed tests, increasing the statewide total to 158,844. The fatality rate is still climbing, with another 131 lives lost due to the coronavirus. New Jersey is now reporting 11,531 deaths related to the illness. Additionally, for the first time in three days the hospitalization rate dropped. That’s a metric the administration says it closely follows in issuing any new guidance for reopening.
