I can do quite a few things without my fingers, but if I had left that digit on, I would have probably continued with what I normally do and I wouldn't have looked for anything else, but I was missing that part, and that part, which I eventually got it right." 24. But when a young boy from Kanini, near Roberston, lost both his hands to burns, help came by way of a home-grown innovation. STORYLINE: He was 15 at the time. Richard Van As, a South African carpenter turned inventor, heard about Engelbrecht's situation and decided to help.
