The plantar fascia is a thick, fibrous band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel bone (calcaneus) to your toes. Its main job is to support the arch of your foot and absorb shock when you walk, run, or stand. Plantar fasciitis happens when the tissue becomes overstretched, inflamed, or irritated—due to prolonged standing, poor footwear, tight calf muscles, or flat feet—it results in sharp, stabbing heel pain, especially when taking your first steps in the morning.
