Rescue work in debris of Mykolaiv’s government building

(30 Mar 2022) Rescue workers continued working in the debris of Mykolaiv's regional government building on Wednesday, searching for survivors and victims of an attack that hit the city the day before. At least 15 people died and 40 were injured when the building was seriously damaged by the strike. "I don't care about building and about papers. The main problem is civilian people (who died in the attack) who are heroes," Kim Vitaliy, the head of Mykolaiv's regional government, told journalists during a news conference. While Ukrainian troops keep fighting the advance of the Russian forces in the outskirts of Mykolaiv, Vitaliy said the situation is under control. But he added that the region continued to face two great problems. "You see that people are walking, they are walking even when there is an alarm working, they are taking their dogs for a walk, we have only one issue: it is the closeness of the enemy and the sky which is not closed, that's what we need," he said. Vitaliy called on foreign companies, and companies in other parts of Ukraine, to help the town by buying locally-made products. He said this would ease what he described as the "catastrophic" economic situation in Mikolaiv. Mykolaiv, which has resisted the Russian offensive for weeks, is considered a key point for Russians if they are to take Odesa by land and control the region of the Black Sea.
