The US Central Command headquarters in Qatar announced on Sunday that Amin, Iraq's chief liaison with United Nations weapons inspectors, was in coalition custody. Members of his family who spoke to APTN at their home in the Harithiya neighbourhood of Baghdad on Sunday said Amin had turned himself in to the US military and would answer any questions put to him by investigators. One of his sons, Muhaned (subs: correct) Amin said he hoped that his father would be able to return safely to his family. Amin, the former head of Iraq's National Monitoring Directorate (NMD) was Number 49 on a US list of the 55 most-wanted figures from Saddam Hussein's regime. He was among the key figures in Saddam's weapons programs and may have detailed knowledge of any illegal armaments, if Iraq still possesses them.
