Chapter 2: RINNOJI TEMPLE | Awakening iii -PROTECT MIKU -SCORE 5 HEADSHOT(S) -60% SHOT ACCURACY Cayden Phoenix, a minor character from Modern Combat 4, is the main character in Modern Combat 5: Blackout. A former US Marine, Phoenix now works as a private military contractor for Gilman Security corporation. At the Gilman Security headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, on the first day of an international summit on cyber security, Phoenix and his supervisor Sophie Daviau ("Roux") debate recent events. This cutscene serves as the introduction to the campaign. A worldwide terrorist group called the World Liberation Army (WLA) had attacked Venice, Italy, unexpectedly three weeks earlier to take chemical weapons that the UN had covertly hidden. A week later, the WLA launched a cyberattack on various Asian networks. Phoenix and Jonathan Taylor ("Bull"), a former US Special Forces agent fired on suspicion of trafficking sensitive materials to terrorist organizations, had been dispatched to Venice as part of a Gilman security task force to thwart the WLA attack. Roux is hesitant to accept Phoenix when he claims that the WLA attack in Venice was actually a cover-up planned by Gilman Security for a bigger purpose. Phoenix further states that Gilman was coerced into signing the mission report by threats against his daughter Lily when Gilman learned of his intrusion into family affairs. Following the conclusion of the prologue, the first mission starts with Phoenix and Bull infiltrating Venice as members of a Gilman Security special forces squad ordered to thwart the WLA attack. After taking out a WLA terrorist leader, Phoenix and Bull are chased by hostile boats and an assault chopper as they flee on a boat via the Grand Canal. After the memory is through, a new sequence starts with Phoenix and Roux picking up where they left off. In an attempt to persuade Roux even more that something significant is going to occur, Phoenix suggests that Gilman Security is implicated.
