She is worshipped on the first day of Nava Rathri. Bramhacharini: Leaving all material pleasure Parvati started performing penance to have Lord Shiva as her consort. Due to severe penance she is called Bramhacharini – a woman of celibacy. She is worshipped on the second day of Nava Rathri. Chandraghanta: After getting married to Lord Shiva; Parvati started adorning her forehead with bell shaped Chandra (crescent moon). So Devi is known as Goddess Chandraghanta. She is worshipped on the third day of Nava Rathri. Kushmanda: Devi Kushmanda created the universe with her divine smile. She is worshipped on the fourth day of Nava Rathri. Skandamata: Mother of Skanda or Lord Kartikeya is known as Skandamata. She is worshipped on the fifth day of Nava Rathri. Katyayani: Devi Katyayani was born as daughter of sage Katyayana. So she was known as ‘Katyayani’. In this form Devi assassinated demon Mashishasura. She is worshipped on the sixth day of Nava Rathri. Kaalrathri: Devi Kaalrathri is cruel, dark-complexioned. She assassinated Shumbha and Nishumbha demons. She is worshipped on seventh day of Nava Rathri. Mahagauri: When Parvati was doing penance to get Shiva as her husband her body got covered with dust, soil and tree-leaves. Post penance she bathed in the holy waters of the Ganga to wash off all the dirt. Thus she became extremely fair- complexioned and glorious. So Parvati came to be known as Mahagauri (Extremely Fair). She is worshipped on the eighth day of the Nava Rathri. Siddhidatri: Devi Siddhidatri is the final form of Durga, worshipped on the final night of Nava Rathri.
