Tesla Partner CATL Reportedly Working on Solid State Battery Just Like Toyota

CATL, which supplies batteries to Tesla, reportedly is working on solid state batteries, just like Toyota and may even get 350 Wh/kg in the long term. Twitter user “Moneyball,” who describes himself as a “China web media researcher,” recently tweeted that “China media”, citing Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), had promised solid-state batteries as part of their long-term plans, The Driven reports. What the big news is here, is that CATL reportedly is promising solid-state batteries with battery density of 200Wh/kg, even 230Wh/kg in the near-term, and as much as 350Wh/kg and 400Wh/kg in the long term. "CATL has made no official announcement of these promises on either their Chinese-language or English-language websites, so we should take this news with a grain of salt. That being said, Moneyball has been proven right in the past, so maybe two grains of salt," writes Joshua Hill of The Driven. Toyota is also working on solid state batteries. They’re lighter, with greater energy density, more range, lower cost, and faster recharge times. But solid-state battery packs for cars are far from ready. Volkswagen, Toyota, General Motors, Hyundai, and Ford all have significant investments in solid-state battery technology companies. Toyota isn't expected to launch a solid state battery before 2025 in mass production. But as Jim Motavalli writes in the Autoweek, "clearly, auto companies would love to have viable solid-state batteries, and some are reportedly further along than others. Nikkei.com reported in December, “Toyota plans to be the first company to sell an electric vehicle equipped with a solid-state battery in the early 2020s. The world’s largest automaker will unveil a prototype next year.” "Toyota confirmed its solid-state plans, but was a little more cautious about the timetable. “Next-generation batteries, such as solid-state and metal-air batteries, are safer and demonstrate higher performance than lithium-ion batteries,” said Ed Hellwig, Toyota Motor North America safety and quality communications manager. “We are currently working on the research and development, including the production technology of solid-state batteries, and we have achieved ultra-small battery electric vehicle driving.
