Maria Svensson, MD, Lund University, discusses the importance of biomarkers in the field of gastric cancers. In a recent study, she used evidence of mismatch repair (MMR) to determine prognosis of the patients. Previously, tumors with high PD-L1 and PD-1 expression in tumor infiltrating immune cells have demonstrated prolonged survival, according to Svensson. Understanding biomarkers as a prognostic measure is important in treatment. Knowing early on the PD-1, PD-L1, and MMR status of a patient can be useful in the clinic for other settings in the future.
