Teen alerts sleeping neighbors to fire

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - A 15-year-old girl was able to alert three of her sleeping neighbors to a fire in their home and help them get outside safely. It was around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday when Aubrea Martinez noticed the fire in the 1200 block of Hays Park Avenue in Kalamazoo. She told her mom to call 911, then went to burning home and knocked on the front door until the residents woke up, police said in a news release. Officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety arrived at the scene and noticed smoke and flames coming from the home. It took an hour to extinguish the flames.
