In 1925,in Liling,Hunan,the Yang family faces changing times.The eldest son,Yang Liren (played by Huang Zhizhong),is a schoolteacher—thoughtful,meticulous,and resourceful.The only daughter,Yang Lihua (played by Zhang Heng),is well-educated,independent,and a symbol of the modern woman.The youngest son,Yang Liqing (played by Sun Honglei),is rebellious by nature but brave and upright.Liren is initially influenced by revolutionary ideas and joins the Kuomintang,later becoming an instructor at the Whampoa Military Academy.By coincidence,Liqing also enrolls there and meets Qu En (played by Sun Chun),a Communist political instructor,along with his family.Liqing not only sees Qu En as a mentor but also falls in love with Qu En’s sister,Qu Xia (played by Ke Lan).As the relationship between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party shifts,the siblings’ lives are dramatically altered.Liqing and Liren eventually turn against each other as enemies.
