Introduction Slide: What is Child Abuse? Slide 2: Child abuse is when a parent or caregiver, whether through action or failing to act, causes injury, death, emotional harm, or risks serious harm to a child. Slide 3: There are many forms of child maltreatment including: neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse. Slide 4: Physical abuse is the non-accidental physical injury of a child or the inadvertent result of physical punishment or physically aggressive treatment of a child. Slide 5: Sexual abuse is any act of a sexual nature upon or with a child for the sexual gratification of the perpetrator or a third party, including anyone who allowed or encouraged it. Slide 6: Emotional abuse is any chronic attitude or act which interferes with the psychological and social development of a child. It occurs when a parent or caregiver harms a child’s mental or social development, or causes severe emotional harm. Slide 7: Neglect can include child-rearing practices which are essentially inadequate or dangerous. The failure to act on behalf of the child; not providing the care, supervision, affection, and support needed for a child’s health, safety, and well-being.
