This is “Dumb” by Nirvana, the MTV Unplugged performance version. “Dumb” was written by Kurt in the summer of 1990, after he had begun to embrace his pop music songwriting instincts. He performed a solo acoustic version of the song in September 1990, on the “Boy Meets Girl" radio show on KAOS FM in Olympia, hosted by Calvin Johnson. This was the first public performance of “Dumb” and the first recording. It was released on “With The Lights Out” alongside “Opinion” and acoustic “Been A Son” also performed that day for KAOS among other songs. In November, Nirvana debuted live the full-band version of “Dumb” in Seattle. A full-band studio version with finished lyrics was recorded during Nirvana's John Peel session for the BBC in London in September 1991. It also can be found on “With The Lights Out” alongside “Endless Nameless” recorded at the same session. Three instrumental takes of “Dumb” were recorded by Jack Endino in October 1992, at Word of Mouth (former Reciprocal) in Seattle. All songs recorded that day were instrumental, except for one take of “Rape Me” featuring crying Frances Bean for some sort of backing vocals. These recordings including “Dumb” were released on the deluxe edition of “In Utero”. The final album studio version of “Dumb” was recorded by Steve Albini at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, in February 1993. The recording features Albini's friend Kera Schaley from the band Doubt on cello, who also played on “All Apologies.” Kurt told in an interview that he wished he had put more songs like “Dumb” and “All Apologies” on previous Nirvana albums, saying that Nirvana had so far “failed in showing the lighter, more dynamic side of our band”. For “Dumb” and “Pennyroyal Tea” they switched out Dave's kick drum for a smaller bass drum to achieve more jazzy sound instead of more hard rock one in the rest of “In Utero” songs. In November 1993, “Dumb” was performed and recorded for the “MTV Unplugged” show with Lori Goldston on cello. In late February 1994, the song alongside “Serve The Servants” was played and recorded in Rome for the Italian TV show “Tunnel”. Melora Crieger was on cello, and that was Nirvana's final TV appearance. “Dumb” was on the setlist at the final Nirvana show, in Munich, on March 1, 1994. Lyrics: I'm not like them, but I can pretend The sun is gone, but I have a light The day is done, but I'm having fun I think I'm dumb, or maybe just happy Think I'm just happy (x3) My heart is broke, but I have some glue help me inhale, and mend it with you We'll float around, and hang out on clouds Then we'll come down, and I have a hangover Have a hangover (x4) Skin the sun Fall asleep Wish away The soul is cheap Lesson learned Wish me luck Soothe the burn Wake me up I'm not like them, but I can pretend The sun is gone, but I have a light The day is done, but I'm having fun I think I'm dumb, or maybe just happy Think I'm just happy (x3) I think I'm dumb (x12) Time code: 00:00 — Song Info & Stage Banter 00:17 — Verse 1 00:38 — Chorus 1 00:56 — Verse 2 01:13 — Chorus 2 01:31 — Bridge 01:49 — Verse 3 02:06 — Chorus 3 02:24 — Outro
