Rescuers pull survivors from earthquake wreckage as death toll reaches over 20k

RESCUERS pulled out a body on a stretcher from the rubble in Diyarbakir, Turkey on Friday (February 10) as hopes were fading that many more would be found alive in the aftermath of earthquakes that shook part of the country on Monday (February 6). Emergency services worked with various tools to set free blocks of rubble on the site of a collapsed building. The combined death toll from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and several powerful aftershocks that rattled Turkey and Syria stood at 21,000 on Friday (February 10) and surpassed the more than 17,000 killed in 1999 when a similarly powerful earthquake hit northwest Turkey.
