He compared himself to a notorious dictator, and then all hell broke loose. From family tragedies to drug abuse to the loss of furry friends, this is the sadly true story of Peter Steele of Type O Negative. Before Peter Steele rose to fame with Type O Negative, he was in another metal band called Carnivore. After they broke up, the members were forced to take regular jobs outside of music. During his time between Carnivore and Type O Negative, Steele worked for the New York City Parks Department. According to Monte Conner, former Vice President of A&R at Roadrunner Records, this was actually the time when Steele was happiest. As he explained to Revolver magazine, "He liked being at home. He liked his routine, and he really enjoyed working for the Parks Department. Pete was like the Jolly Green Giant. You can picture him walking through the park, doing his thing, saying hello to all the old ladies, and probably bringing bagels for the homeless." Steele was still making music while working his day job, but he wasn't interested in touring. He resisted for so long that it became a source of conflict within Type O Negative and even led to their drummer leaving the band.
