Unabomber - Ted Kaczynski - Forgotten History
The Unabomber was the nickname given to Theodore “Ted” Kaczynski, an American domestic terrorist responsible for a nationwide bombing campaign that lasted nearly two decades. Between 1978 and 1995, Kaczynski mailed or placed homemade explosive devices targeting universities, airlines, scientists, and technology-related institutions, killing three people and injuring 23 others. The name “Unabomber” originated from the FBI’s case file designation “UNABOM,” which stood for “University and Airline Bomber.” Kaczynski, a former mathematics prodigy and Harvard graduate, lived as a recluse in a remote cabin in Montana where he built the bombs and wrote his anti-technology manifesto, Industrial Society and Its Future. In 1995, major newspapers published the manifesto at the request of the FBI, hoping someone would recognize the writing style. Kaczynski’s brother eventually identified him, leading to his arrest in 1996. The Unabomber case remains one of the longest and most complex investigations in FBI history and continues to be discussed in debates about domestic terrorism, anti-technology extremism, and the psychological profile of lone-wolf attackers. For almost 20 years the nation was following the sporadic and insane activities of someone called the Unabomber, who sent or delivered bombs as packages to what appeared to be random victims. There seemed to be no rational reason for the attacks, as the victims seemed to have little in common, and in fact they did not even know each other. The lack of a common denominator was the reason the Federal Bureau of Investigation launched the most expensive manhunt in its long history.
