Turkey - Four Killed In Istanbul Clashes

(15 Mar 1995) T/I: 11:00:24 At least four people were killed and 20 injured on Wednesday (15/3) in Istanbul as violence flared once again in Turkey's largest city. A group of protesters clashed with police in the slum district of Umraniye after shots were fired from the crowd. A curfew was imposed on three Umraniye neighbourhoods and one area of the adjacent Uskudar district. The clashes followed the funerals of six people killed in three days of riots between Alawaite Moslems and Islamic militants.
