Stop Teaching Kids Sight Words! Here's Why

Here's what to do if your child comes home with a sight word list like this... 1. Prioritize getting your child to know letter sounds and blending first. Teach them the sounds "i", "n" "t" etc and practice blending words like "in" and "it" rather than memorizing them. 2. Find all of the "rule-breakers" on the list where certain letters in the word don't make their TYPICAL sound (like "of" which makes the sounds of "uv".) 3. Go through these words with your child to identify which letters in the word DO make the right sound....then, put a heart above the part that breaks the rule. THAT is the part they need to put in their memory! Following these 3 steps for sight words will give your child a much better headstart for learning to read! This is the exact way we teach sight words in my Reading Rescue Blueprint course!
