Wave of the Day: Sheldon Simkus, Kirra Point, January 3rd

This was around mid-morning Monday, just on or past the peak of the TC Seth swell, Kirra’s special New Year’s gift to its followers. Sheldon: “I hadn’t seen it that big and that clean for a coupla years. I was already pretty surfed out, me and Macy (Callaghan, girlfriend) had surfed for about six hours on Sunday, but we knew Monday was going to be the day, so we got up early and checked it from the hill. We were lucky to have a high tide with so much swell — it kept things under control. I went out with Soli (Bailey) on the ski but there were quite a few skis down the end so we just decided to take turns paddling. I’d just got a fun one and I was sitting next to Jay Phillips. Jay’s surfed Kirra a lot and he knows it pretty well, so I thought I’ll just hang here next to him. I said to Jay, ‘Whatever wave you don’t want, let me know and I’ll go.’ He went one and I was drifting around kinda by myself. Then this wave came. I remember dropping in and just kinda slowing myself down a bit for it, getting set. Kirra’s such a unique wave, it feels like you’re super deep, but as long as you hold your speed you’ll get through it. This one was big enough that you could tell what was going to happen. It wasn’t hard at all. I was lucky to be there for it. One of those can make or break your whole swell.” Video: Simon Saffigna ----------------------------------- Subscribe: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c...
