Why Game Maker's Toolkit is Not Good for Design Education

Join us on Discord!   / discord   And on Twitter!   / gdes_academia   I'm sure you've all heard of Mark Brown's Game Maker's Toolkit (GMTK). It's one of the really popular game design channels out there on YouTube, and it does a fantastic job at engendering a greater degree of appreciation for the complexity and depth of game design. Unfortunately, some people look at it as a one-stop-shop for game design education and theory, which is not a role these videos fit very well. We did a GDA discussion-oriented stream where a particularly engaged member of GDA helped create a really nice back-and-forth around why a particular GMTK video (Building Better Skill Trees,    • Building Better Skill Trees  ) doesn't constitute effective game design process or productive analysis for aspiring game designers.
