(3 Jun 2014) Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday he was "deeply troubled" by the United States' decision to maintain relations with the new Palestinian unity government, backed by Hamas. Speaking on Wednesday, Netanyahu urged the world not to work with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' new government, saying the Islamist militant group had killed hundreds of Israelis. However, the United States said it was prepared to give the new government a chance. Washington and the European Union have however said the government must reject violence and accept Israel's right to exist. Abbas said his new Cabinet, made up of apolitical technocrats, was committed to these principles. Netanyahu also urged the United States to make it "absolutely clear" to Abbas that his pact with Hamas is "simply unacceptable."
