Mile 1,000! Yosemite! An incredible section of the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail, but! Every PCT hiker must carry a bear can through here. It is required within the Sierra and especially yosemite. From the miles of 754-763, 779-807, and 929-997 you have to have one. It is unavoidable! So naturally by the end of this stretch around mile 1,000 (at Sonora Pass and Kennedy Meadows North) you are just about ready to throw it off a cliff. No Bad Days Hiking Shirt! https://jupiterhikes.com/product-cate... MY GEAR LIST (Weights, names, links) https://jupiterhikes.com/gear/ The bear cans aren't so bad when it comes to weight, mine came in around two and a half pounds. Though they certainly aren't ultralight by any means. I personally used the BV450, though I wish I had used the BV500 instead for the extra space for food. The real problem with them is the bulk, the same hard body construction that makes them bear-proof makes them extremely uncomfortable and unwieldy to carry. As for this section of trail, It is strange to be hiking through Yosemite National Park, and to not see Half Dome, or go into the valley. But on the other hand it is very cool to see the rest of the park, the paths less taken, the glaciated peaks, the wilderness, and the backcountry of one of the most popular National Parks within the US. Places most visitors will never see. The mosquitoes were pretty bad through here every time I dropped down into the meadows and valleys. The climbs were incredibly steep but also very short. Between each climb there was a river to ford. Overall it was a pretty challenging section of trail physically, and I was happy to have my tiny ultralight pack! And given the pressure of bugs I had to be extra careful with campsite selection. This area is also home to my coldest night of the trail yet, a low in the 20s! My Enlightened Equipment 30 degree quilt was working overtime to keep me warm but overall I was very comfortable, wearing all my clothes to sleep. Soon I will be back on the Tahoe Rim Trail, a familiar place for me as I thru hiked it the year prior. Just after I finished last year the dixie fire and some other big wildfires burned a lot of the area, and it will be interesting to see what kind of damage was done. I think a lot of the Lake Tahoe are was spared, but that north of there did not fair so well around Lassen Volcano National Park. No more bear can! My pack is ultralight again! I am almost done with the Sierra! And soon I will up my miles per day again, and keep this fastpacking journey going. I always joked that I like to hike as if I am trying to set an FKT (fastest known time) but that I am just bad at it. I think this journey is a great example of that as my miles per day are high, my breaks are short, my backpacking kit is super ultralight, and I am traveling solo. I emplore a lot of the same tips and tricks those who are setting fkt's use in my own hiking. PCT landscape paintings by me! http://jupiterhikes.com/product-categ...
