Mr. Jackoboice (1941-2006), affectionately known as, “Chief,” graduated from the University of Michigan with both Bachelor & Master of Music degrees. He played for 6 years under Dr. William D. Revelli. His instrument of primary specialty was the trumpet. Mr. Jackoboice studied advanced conducting under Professor Karl Osterreicher at the Vienna University of Music in Austria. He served as Assistant Director of Bands at both Cornell University & the University of Minnesota. Mr. Jackoboice started at The Univ. of Akron on the first day it joined the University System of Ohio in 1967. He served as Professor of Music & Director of Bands. From 1985 through 1987 he served as coordinator of the undergraduate music division in the University's School of Music. He was conductor at the Revelli International School of Music in Montreux/Glion, Switzerland. Mr. Jackoboice was also Dean of Music and special conductor at the International Education Institute at the Univ. of Exeter, England. He was Music Director & Conductor of the Freedom Brass Band, & was active throughout the U.S.A. as a conductor, adjudicator & arranger for many years. His final resting place is at Rose Hill Cemetery in Akron. Dr. Dominic J. Guzzetta, (1919-2010) was the University's 11th president during most of the period when Mr. Jackoboice served as Director of Bands. Dr. Guzzetta’s first love was music, & he always visited the marching band each season. He said, “the football team may not always win, but the marching band sure does.” Guzzetta Hall is named in his honor, in part, because of the steps he took as president to strengthen the School of Music. A graduate of the University at Buffalo, New York, Dr. Guzzetta earned his baccalaureate, master's & doctorate degrees in 1948, 1951 and 1953, respectively. He completed additional coursework at other institutions, including Alfred University, Syracuse University & the University of Rochester. Dr. Guzzetta was the recipient of honorary degrees from 5 colleges & universities. Prior to his career in education, Guzzetta was a shoe repairman, a professional jazz musician (saxophone) & an active and reserve military soldier, earning the rank of lieutenant colonel, having served in the Pacific during World War II. His final resting place is at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Silver Creek, NY.
