During the Second World War, women saw service in many different militaries. But the Red Army used female soldiers to take the fight to the Germans on the battlefields. Stalin allowed women to pick up arms following Operation Barbarossa and the fact the Red Army lost a huge amount of men at the hands of the Wehrmacht. A number of women were involved in the Air Force and groups of female aviators were known as 'The Night Witches,' as they carried out raids on the German lines. But if a woman soldier was captured they were often executed immediately by the Germans. The Germans and the Nazis deemed the Female Soviet Soldiers as the worst example of communism and Bolshevism and with this German Army officials ordered their soldiers to execute them. Many were executed by firing squads or at gallows inside of towns, and others were executed on trees to send a message to the local people. The use of women in the Red Army went totally against Hitler's ideas, and only a tiny percentage of them were sent to Prisoner of War camps, or Concentration Camps such as Ravensbruck.
