Another offering from the song book 'The Jolly Herring' I came across that I did not know is 'The Field Of The Willows'. The song has the feel of a really old folk song, but in fact is not all that old having been written by Dave Goulder, a dry stone wall builder and song writer from Derbyshire who is only 6 years older than me. He is best known for his song 'The January Man' which I intend to upload tomorrow. I have not been able to find a version of this song so have had to rely on my own instincts as to the tempo, having worked out the tune using MuseScore. The Field Of The Willows Dave Goulder C Am Dm7 G7 In the Field of the Willows where I used to stay C Am Dm7 G7 ‘Twas there that I washed all my troubles away E7 Am F With the rain coming down every hour of the day C G7 C In the Field of the Willows so gay. I saw an old man looking awfully queer Sat under a tree with a bottle of beer But when I got there he’d been dead for a year In the Field of the Willows so gay. To leave him unburied I knew was a sin But I was too lazy a grave to begin So I put on my boots and I trampled him in In the Field of the Willows so gay. As I took a walk by the river one day Saw the minister’s daughter a-heading my way, She said, “Come on, let’s go and sit down in the hay,” In the Field of the Willows so gay. So into the dark of the barn we did creep But it wasn’t the maiden who sang me to sleep But seventeen horses, twelve cows and a sheep In the Field of the Willows so gay. There’s a hermit lives up on the mountain so high And he washes himself every tenth of July. The fish in the river roll over and die In the Field of the Willows so gay. A dashing young p’liceman went off on his trail But came back next morning all tattered and pale With a pitchfork behind like a long wooden tail In the Field of the Willows so gay. In the Field of the Willows where I used to stay ‘Twas there that I washed all my troubles away With the rain coming down every hour of the day In the Field of the Willows so gay.
