Hyper-Orchestration Walkthrough: The Great Nut Caper
It's always a pleasure to work with young composers and see how they use VSL instruments to shape their ideas! Thanks for sharing @AnthonyPhanMusic "The Great Nut Caper" is a high-energy adventure cue inspired by the world of animation. It follows the story of two squirrels caught in a wild chase through the forest! I wanted to capture the playful chaos and excitement of their adventure while giving the brass section a chance to shine! I began by writing the brass first, then gradually layered in the rest of the orchestra to reinforce melodies, add color, and create the energetic "hyper-orchestration" that we hear in the cue! :D Along the way, I also drew inspiration from studying the orchestration techniques of my favorite composers like John Powell, particularly how woodwinds can reinforce and help bring out melodic lines within a dense and complex setting. Self-taught since the age of 15, he has spent countless hours studying orchestration and composition, discovering a passion for the world of film scoring. He is currently scoring the upcoming indie animated series The Icarus Contract for Studio Crown Iris and Forgotten for JoyArk Toons, while also contributing as an additional composer to the upcoming indie RPG Mario & Luigi: Star Journey. Alongside his work for film and games, he has served as sound designer for Mississippi State University's Shackouls Honors College Classical Week stage production during Fall 2026, while continuing to expand his portfolio in both concert and cinematic music. In September 2025, Anthony collaborated with Vienna Symphonic Library to create a demo track for the Synchron Prime Orchestra. He returned in July 2026 to compose additional demo tracks for several Vienna Symphonic Library sample libraries. Over the years, Anthony has competed in various concert music and film scoring competitions, earning international recognition as a winner and finalist in several competitions. In March 2025, he was awarded the NFMC Mississippi 1st Place Composer title for his piece, Expedition Odyssey. Most recently, in March 2026, his piece Surge took home Best Overall Performance in the "Songs of a Young Nation" National Music Competition, hosted by the American Battlefield Trust. In May 2025, Anthony was invited to guest conduct and collaborate with the DeSoto Central High School Symphonic Winds Ensemble for the world premiere of Expedition Odyssey for Wind Ensemble.
