This Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India – and many believe that a visit here liberates one from the cycle of life and death (moksha). The temple we see today was rebuilt in 1780 by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, after centuries of invasions and reconstructions. Its golden spire and dome were added later by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab, who donated one ton of gold for the temple’s crown.
