Moscow has accused the diplomat of espionage, charges Tokyo has denied, saying Russian authorities used abusive interrogation techniques on the diplomat identified as Motoki Tatsunori. He was reportedly blindfolded with his hands restrained and his head held down, according to Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno speaking at a press conference in Tokyo on September 27, 2022. Russia has confirmed the detention but has not officially responded to Tokyo’s allegations.
