As the U.S.-China trade war heats up, Beijing has hit out at the U.S by suspending exports of critical rare earth elements, metals and magnets that the West heavily depends on. According to a New York Times report, shipments of these vital components, used in everything from smartphones and electric vehicles to missiles and jet engines, have been halted at Chinese ports. The Chinese government is said to be drafting a new regulatory system that could permanently restrict exports to certain companies, including U.S. military contractors. This move is part of China’s retaliation against U.S. President Trump’s aggressive trade policies, including the steep tariff hikes on Chinese goods.
