Consonantal usage of the / j /: (1) in initial position--Yolande, Yannick, yoga, yaourt, le "yod" (2) in final position--Camille, Antilles, fille, gentille, feuille, rouille (3) in medial position between two pronounced vowels--payer, frétillant, meilleur, paillasson, que nous ayons, que vous ayez. Three main exceptions for "-ille" spelling: ville (village, villageois), mille (millier, million), tranquille (tranquillement). Exceptions can also be found in some proper nouns, such as Gilles, Cyrille, Porte de la Villette.
