Sunrise viewing events once again bustling with people making their New Year's wish for first time in three years 3년 만에 돌아온 해맞이 행사들 새해 첫 일출보며 신년 소원 빌러 온 사람들로 해운대도 북적 In Korea, people often kick off the New Year by watching the first sunrise. These sunrise viewing events have been closed for the past two years due to COVID-19, but they've opened up again this year. Our Kim Yeon-seung reports. A bright start to the New Year. On Haeundae beach in Busan, people once again formed big crowds to watch the first sunrise of 2023. "People have been coming in since the morning twilight eagerly waiting for the first sunrise of the year. And when they caught a glimpse of the sun peek over the horizon, they made their first wish of 2023." "I came out at 5AM because I live quite far away. I came to wish for my family to be healthy in 2023" "I'm a high school senior this year, so my wish is to get into to a good college." "I wished to be together with my boyfriend for a long time." "So, I'm from Iran and as you might know in the news it's happening at revolution and movement is happening so my new year's resolution is freedom for Iran and for my people to be happy and free." People also whipped out their phones to capture the moment. This is the first time in three years that the beach has bustled with early-birds making wishes at sunrise. For the two last New Year's, sunrise viewing events were suspended due to COVID-19. But with social distancing measures receding, other popular sunrise viewing spots have also rebounded, from Ganjeolgot Cape in Ulsan, to the beaches along the East coast. In Busan alone, local authorities estimate that roughly 106-thousand people came to view the sunrise at the 27 spots that held events. "It's really nice because I have had only experienced Korea during COVID times. It's my first time like after it got better so very excited." "I think it's amazing and this is the best way to start the new year in America where usually sleeping so this is awesome." "I'm so glad that these events are once again coming back with the COVID pandemic receding." The year 2023 starts with one less worry than the previous year. Hopefully the rest of the year remains as cheerful as its start.
